Construction began in 1806, but the immense arch was not completed until around 1836, under Louis Philippe (the last king of France). The design is by architect Jean-François Chalgrin. He took his inspiration from the Arch of Titus, a Roman triumphal arch in the Roman Forum.
The arch was built on the line that the Louvre, the Grande Arche and Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel connects. The distinctive Arc de Triomphe is 50 meters high. He stands at the western end of the Champs Elysees, one of the busiest roundabouts in Paris. At the Arc de Triomphe listed all the names of places where Napoleon won a victory, and the names of 660 generals and officers are engraved inside the complex in the walls.
In the gate of the Arc de Triomphe is a small museum where you can find an overview of the history of the Arc. Under the Arc de Triomphe is further the tomb of the unknown soldier in 1921, and here also lit the eternal flame. The arch is the second largest in the world. It is one of the best places for the celebrations around July 14th or to celebrate other events. At the top of the Arc de Triomphe you can make the best pictures. After climbing 234 steps you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the district of La Defense, the Champs-Elysées and the Sacre-Coeur.
